"Hill walking rock climbing dancing are fun. And re "

I'd like to feel at home with someone, easy, able to talk and be quiet. But that's the bullseye - just someone who's good to chat to, to go to films with or on walks with would be wonderful.

I like being outside, but I could love an indoors guy if he was funny or kind or both. I like to have a project going, a goal to work on slowly. I write children's books, walk my dog, see friends, swim wherever I can. I'm happy to cook ordinary sort of stuff but I'm not a foodie. I don't care about wine. If there was a rock-climbing, classics-reading, kindly fellow out there who also liked dancing, I wouldn't believe my luck. I'm reasonably organised but a very long way from obsessive. I like to be on time. There might be another 30 years left and I'd like the time to be well-filled, not just ambling along moaning about things. I'd like it to be fun, varied, lived with a bit of zest.

    Occupation:
I write children's books, traditionally published. My second book was the Sunday Times Book of the Week when it came out. My third is coming out in early 2026. I can't imagine ever stopping. I love every stage of the process, tortuous though it is. I do a bit of volunteering which tests my logging-in capabilities.

    Education:
Catholic boarding school, safe but dull. St Andrews University, much more fun. 2.2 Honours Degree in Russian Language and Literature, with some civilising art history classes on the side.

    Heritage:
All my grandparents were British, with some French, Irish and Scottish thrown in. My Dad was in the Navy so we moved around every two years as a family. My paternal grandmother was a darling and a great influence. She was a nurse and had travelled to Australia and Africa. There are some teetotal missionaries among my forebears, and some boozy port wine tasters.

    Religion:
Raised a Catholic, I let my faith drop away when my children were young, after reading the God Delusion. I love a Latin Mass though. Seems to me the very word 'belief' implies that you don't know and are allowing the imagination in. I'm very fond of God and happy whether he exists or not.

    Politics:
I feel a fortunate member of society and am aware that many are less fortunate, so I tend to vote with them in mind. I make efforts to shift towards more environmentally friendly habits. i've been on a few marches but am only mildly political.

    Appearance:
I'm tall and slim with brown (dyed) curly hair. Sort of healthy looking. I'm not glammy as in jewellery and fancy boots. I like expensive wool jumpers and sometimes pay full price, sometimes find them in charity shops or the sales.

    Languages Spoken:
French, Russian, Smattering of these plus I can pronounce Portuguese

    Musical Instruments played:
I've been learning Spanish Romance on the ukelele. i'd love to meet a musician.

    Music Enjoyed:
    Classical, Folk, Opera, Pop

    Sports and exercise:
Climbing, Cycling, Ice Skating, Pilates, Swimming, Table Tennis, Yoga

    Interests and activities:
Art, Camping, Cooking, Countryside, Ecology, Friends, Hiking, Mountains, Painting, Reading, Singing, Voluntary Work, Walking, Writing, I'm in a choir. They sing pretty difficult classical stuff, but it's lovely listening to the bass and tenors when they're practising alone.

    Animals and Pets:
I have a Large Munsterlander who is nothing but trouble, but there we are.

    Newspapers and magazines:
Big Issue, Economist, Financial Times, Guardian, Independent, New Scientist, The Week, The Times

    Books:
Bruce Chatwin, C. S. Lewis, Hanif Kureishi, Louis de Bernieres, Mervyn Peake, Michael Ondaatje, Philip Larkin, Ted Hughes, Rohinton Mistry, Jane Austen, George Eliot, Abraham Verghese, Tolstoy, Chekhov, Babara Kingsolver, Colm Toibin, any random thing that took my eye in the bookshop

    Favourite Films:
Butch Cassidy and the Sundance Kid, Casablanca, Cinema Paradiso, Gone with the Wind, Jean de Florette, Kind Hearts and Coronets, Maltese Falcon, Psycho

    Enjoyable evening out:
Art Gallery, Cinema, Restaurant, Musical, Theatre, i do love musicals.

    Favourite Dishes:
Lemongrass and ginger marinated chicken, Smoked Salmon, Tomato + Mozarella salad, I like a mushroom risotto with truffle. And fish. I'd never order veal or fois gras.

    Ideal Holiday:
Backpacking in the Himalayas, Learning to paint in Provence, Safari in Africa, Whitewater rafting in the Rockies, Scuba diving is terrifying, I never want to do that again. But I love climbing. I used to lead climb but now its just scrambling or following up a V Diff.

    In another life:
Me again!, Audrey Hepburn, Dalai Lama, Gandhi, Leonardo Da Vinci, Mozart, a dolphin, a golden eagle, a tree, an explorer, An explorer would be great. I read some of Willard Price's books as a kid, Amazon Adventure and Lion Adventure etc, and thought, that is the life for me.

    Personality:
Affectionate, Adventurous, Cheerful, Confident, Courageous, Friendly, Generous, Humorous, Imaginative, Positive, Practical, Reliable, Strong, Thoughtful, Over-thinking comes up a bit. I have some ambition but it's carefully cloaked. I used to be moody but kids knocked it out of me. I'm not sentimental.
